Dried Herb Accessory Definitions

What defines a bowl piece?

The Bowl: The basin where you pack your ground herb.

The Joint: It sits directly into the downstem. The most common size you'll see is 14mm but some pieces call for larger 18mm or smaller 10mm joints.

Adapters: You can use an adapter to make a joint fit into a mismatched hole. Common adapters include male to female, 14mm to 18mm, and 18mm to 14mm.

The Process: You pack the basin, light the herb, and inhale to draw smoke through the water. When you’ve reached your desired smoke density, you pull the bowl piece up and out to allow fresh air to rush through the bong.

Best For:

Standard water pipe setups.

Controlling the size of your hit by choosing different bowl capacities.

Easy cleaning and swapping between different glass styles.

What defines a downstem?

The Bowl Joint: The top end of the downstem, the bowl piece slides into this opening.

The Stem: A long, hollow glass tube that bridges the gap between the bowl and the water inside the bong.

The Diffusor: Most modern downstems feature slits or holes at the bottom to break the smoke into tiny bubbles. Slits allow for more oxygen thus creating a looser vacuum inside the piece while you inhale. Holes tighten the vacuum by reducing the oxygen. Holes create a satisfying rumble in the piece compared to the airiness of slits. This can greatly improve the experience of your bong since the perfect rip is a balanced vacuum, not too much or too little oxygen flowing while you inhale.

Best For:

Essential filtration for any "beaker" or "straight tube" style bong.

Customizing your hit—diffused downstems provide a smoother, quieter pull.

What defines an ash catcher?

The Basin: An additional glass chamber that sits between your bowl and your bong's downstem. It usually contains a small amount of water.

The Trap: It is specifically designed to catch burnt debris (ash) and resin before it can enter the main body of your water pipe.

The Diffusion: Most ash catchers include a diffusor that helps cool the smoke or vapor. Dry catchers do not require water and do not have diffusors.

The Process: Smoke passes from the bowl into the ash catcher first. The ash is trapped in the catcher’s water, and the pre-filtered smoke then continues into the bong.

Best For:

Keeping your main bong clean for much longer periods.

Adding an extra layer of cooling and filtration to your hits.

Enthusiasts who hate the "dirty bong" smell and want a smoother experience.

What defines a grinder/mill?

The Grind Plate: Grinders have a set of sharp, interlocking metal or plastic pegs inside the top and middle chambers. Mills have a hole-punched plate that works with a toothless top.

The Basin: The flower falls into this basin where it can be stored.

The Kief Catcher: Most grinders feature a "kief catcher" at the bottom, a fine mesh screen that collects potent resin crystals over time. A mill usually doesn't need a kief catcher since the kief stays on the flower.

The Process: You place whole flower between the teeth and rotate the lid manually. The teeth shear the bud into small, consistent pieces that fall through holes into a storage chamber. The mill uses the same technique but instead of shredding the flower it breaks it a part without separating the kief from the flower.

Best For:

Collecting kief for later use.

Achieving a standard, fluffy texture for bowls and joints.
